Review – The Ultimate Guide to Trail Running and Ultramarathons by Jason Robillard

One line review – Great book. Terrible title.

This isn’t really an “ultimate guide” and I don’t believe for a minute that the author was setting out to write one. The book is really an account of his own experiences of running ultras and the various strategies that he has tried over the years to improve his running. There is a great deal of humour in the book and a lot of honesty about his own successes and failures. It is packed full of tips and ideas to try and play around with but don’t come to it looking for a training plan or hard and fast rule that will see you smashing personal bests. This book is better than that.
The book is certainly an easy read and you can feel his background as a blogger with the format of several small sections loosely put together to form a narrative. This does at times lead to a certain amount of repetition but his charisma comes across in his writing so well that I can’t say it proved a problem. Instead it felt like an old friend recounting their funny running anecdotes with a “stop me if you’ve heard this one before”.
Conclusion – a great book that probably deserved a better editor.
