Gary Taubes – Why We Get Fat

I have just finished reading Why We Get Fat and it certainly gets you thinking about received wisdom. He challenges the idea that getting fat is simply a case of calories in being greater than calories out and instead looks to the insulin spike created by eating refined carbs as a cause of obesity. This message is unlikely to be new to anyone post- Atkins but I think this is worth a read for it’s simple explanation of the science behind it. For a more detailed work check out his book Diet Delusion.I expect that in future we will find the demonisation of carbohydrates just as foolish as the demonisation of fats before it and I also expect that his optimism in the belief that people will lose weight and KEEP IT OFF on a eat as much fat as you want but avoid carb diet will prove false.
The only people I know who have maintained weight loss have done it through engaging in a more active lifestyle and avoiding processed food. The leanest people I know of follow a 80/10/10 vegan diet and run. A lot.
So my experience doesn’t align perfectly to the ideas presented in this book but I would certainly recommend it to anyone who wants to better understand the science of obesity.
